Quotation Analysis
A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder
Pg. 337-338
“She looked at Cara then, really looked at her. And the invisible barrier around her closed in, constricting her throat as she tried to push down the tears. The sadness she felt for Cara was black and twisting and hungry. How was any of this fair?”
This quotation is important to the whole plot because the main character Pip was investigating a murder case for a school project and found out that her best friend’s father is the murderer. Relating to the theme which is friendship, even though Pip is relieved that she found out the murderer, her project can come to an end, and she was right the entire time. She feels sorry for her friend Cara. Pip feels sorry for Cara when she did not do anything wrong because she spent almost her whole life with Cara and knows that Cara will be devastated because she lost her mother a few years ago. Pip reporting the murderer to the police will leave Cara shattered with only her sister left, but she will need to do it for Sal who was accused of murder for years. Not only that she feels bad for Cara, Pip has mixed emotions because Cara’s father Elliot is a teacher at her school and she must have had many interactions with him because they live in a small town in Connecticut.
The Star of David was first used by the Jewish Community of Prague as their first official symbol. In the 17th century, many Jewish communities used the Star of David as their own official seal and the general sign of Judaism. The Star was also adopted by the Zionist Movement at its 1897 Congress after the Dreyfus Affair in the 19th century. In the 20th century, the Nazis used the Star of David to mark Jews for oppression. After the Holocaust, the same star that was used against the Jews became part of Isreal’s flag.
The Star of David is not only a complex symbol, but it also has meaning behind it. According to a medieval book of Jewish mysticism called Zohar, the six points of the star represent the male attributes of God and the seventh point (center of the Star) is the sefirah of the female. There are also seven fields in the Star of David which are, kindness, severity, harmony, perseverance, splendor, foundation, and royalty. A more modern explanation of the Star of David would be that the corners of one represent creation, revelation and redemption. The corners of the other represent Man, the World, and God. There are also three entities in the Star of David named the Holy One, Zorah, and Israel.
